What's The Latest on Shipping Semen From Europe?

In 2024, the Border Target Operating Model came into effect, classifying equine semen as a high-risk product. This change required every shipment to have a documentary, physical, and identity check at the border.

By working closely with DEFRA and other authorities, Elite Stallions played a key role in the development of the 2024 Chilled Equine Semen Facilitation Scheme pilot scheme. As a result, shipments only required a documentary check at the border, with just 5% of shipments needing inspection by the inseminating vet at the destination.

What’s Changing in 2025?

The scheme now requires that 100% of shipments be checked by a registered vet at the destination. The vet must confirm that the contents match the paperwork, and this must be reported back to the Border Control Post (BCP) within 24 hours.

Stansted BCP has chosen not to adopt this scheme and is proposing a fee of approx £250 per package to carry out the border checks, with the risk of delayed shipments due to the tight timeframes. Because of this, Elite Stallions will avoid this BCP but still provide deliveries to any UK address as normal.

What Does This Mean for You?

For 2025, the process will be similar to last year other than that your vet will need to complete one extra piece of paperwork. Please note that all shipments through Elite Stallions will require inspection by your vet at the destination, rather than at the border.

What Should You Do?

When placing your order on our website or app, be sure to select the veterinary practice you’ll be using for insemination. This gives your vet access to the necessary import information, including export health papers and, soon, the validated CHEDP and declaration paperwork.

Important Reminder:

Only a registered vet can complete the physical checks and sign the required paperwork. If you're an AI technician performing the insemination, a vet must still do the checks and complete the documents. We're working with DEFRA to address this, but for now, only a vet can sign the declaration.

How is Elite Stallions Helping?

We’re here to make things as easy as possible. In addition to our new dedicated delivery service for those in the Stansted area, we’ll handle all the necessary documentation for all our clients (CHEDP, Export Health Certificates, shipping, duties, and taxes) and have created a new vet profile area on our website for quick access to everything your vet needs. This will save your vet time and streamline the process.
